The Community Health Nurse in the Prenatal Clinic follows clients seen at KMHC by the prenatal doctor, who delivers at Anna Laberge Hospital, from their first appointment through their first week at home with baby.
In early pregnancy, we can help guide clients to make informed decisions about their pregnancy, including
- Booking the first prenatal appointment
- How to find a prenatal doctor if you choose not to deliver at Anna Laberge.
- How to obtain folic acid or prenatal vitamins, or medications for nausea and vomiting without a prescription
- How to arrange for necessary testing (dating ultrasound or blood work) prior to first appointment if needed.
- Counselling and non-judgemental support also offered if client decides not to continue with their pregnancy.
Clients who are followed at KMHC by Dr. St. Cyr, are followed by the nurse each visit for weight and blood pressure, relevant teaching related to stage of pregnancy, and management of symptoms of pregnancy discomforts.
Additionally, we offer the pertussis vaccine to all pregnant community members, and WinRho to Rh-negative Moms as needed.
Prenatal Classes take place about four times a year, in collaboration with Tekanonhkwatsherane:ken – Traditional Medicine. Topics include traditional medicine teas during pregnancy, labor & delivery, breastfeeding, the new baby, and ceremonies and teachings around birth.
Prenatal Nutrition workshops in collaboration with OPC Clinical Nutritionist are also offered to anyone interested.
These classes are open to all pregnant community members and their birth support people. Individual sessions available on request.
