The Community Oral Health Service (COHS) provides dental care to students in Kahnawake schools through a Dental Hygienist, supported by a Dental Administrative Aide. The Dental Hygienist offers dental screenings, fluoride varnish applications, sealants, and referrals for dental care to participants in schools, daycares, and homes. Additionally, they promote oral health practices to pregnant women, parents, caregivers, organized groups, and the wider community.
If needed, parents are informed to arrange a visit to the family dentist for their child. The Dental Hygienist also provides dental care for elders living in long-term care at KMHC.
Program Goals:
- Focus on preventing dental disease through education rather than solely on treatment.
- Reduce the rate of dental disease in children aged 1-7 years.
- Decrease the number of children requiring dental treatment under general anesthesia.
