Public Health

Public Health Kahnawake looks to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong life among Kahnawakero:non. We work in conjunction with the regional public health at the Monteregie and the federal program through Indigenous Service Canada.

Vaccination is provided free of charge for any vaccines covered through the provincial vaccination program or through Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB). Vaccines are the first line of prevention of communicable diseases. These include vaccines that prevent diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, Hib, hepatitis A & B, polio, pneumococcus, Covid, influenza, meningitis, rabies, rotavirus, measles, mumps, rubella, HPV, and shingles. Many of these are given in the Baby Clinic to children.  Adult have needs for different vaccines and boosters for previous vaccines. All are available at KMHC. Some travel vaccines (yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, cholera, typhoid) are only available at specialized travel clinics.

Reportable Diseases are followed by our public health team to decrease of spread and assure patients get the treatment needed. These include but are not limited to:  sexually transmitted infections (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, etc.), communicable diseases (measles, chicken pox, Covid, tuberculosis, etc.), infections acquired through animal/insects (malaria, West Nile, Lyme, Rabies, etc.).

Disease prevention includes teaching regarding about the prevention and control of infections in schools/daycares and workplace, identifying when outbreaks have occurred and sending information to the parents and staff at school or staff in workplace, annual vaccinations for influenza Contact us.
