Who is caring for you
A multidisciplinary team ensures the best quality of care for residents at KMHC.
Rounding physicians at KMHC support the Inpatient Care team in providing clinical care to residents. With one rounding physician on the ward and support from medical residents, medical issues are assessed and treated promptly. Physicians and residents also collaborate with Traditional Medicine to ensure culturally relevant and safe care for KMHC residents.
Nursing is vital to the functioning of Inpatient Care (IPC) at KMHC. The dedicated team, which includes Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Prepose aux Beneficiares (PABs), physicians, Activity Workers, Caregivers, and volunteers, ensures residents consistently receive high-quality care in the wards.
Each department, such as Short Term Care (STC) and Long Term Care (LTC), operates under the guidance of the Director of Nursing & Community Care. For more details on the specific services provided, refer to the Admissions Packages available for each department.
The Rehabilitation Department collaborates with Inpatient Care (IPC) to address residents’ physical needs through a team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists. Each resident is supported throughout their rehabilitation journey, with the goal of restoring them to their pre-injury state or providing them with the tools to live with a permanent injury.
Physiotherapists focus on mobility and strength, Occupational Therapists help patients regain daily living skills, and Speech-Language Pathologists address communication and swallowing issues.
Each resident at KMHC has legal rights and freedoms, and social work plays a key role in ensuring these rights are protected. Social workers focus on safeguarding the patient’s autonomy, addressing financial concerns, and assisting with other legal matters. They also help ensure the organization’s liability is managed appropriately, providing essential support for both patient safety and legal compliance.
KMHC’s recreational therapy program offers a variety of activities to keep residents engaged and cognitively stimulated. The Activities Team provides support while ensuring entertainment, including a new Tovofel machine as part of their offerings.
Working alongside western medicine, KMHC’s Traditional Medicine team provides culturally relevant and traditional care approaches. They collaborate with the Inpatient Care (IPC) team to offer alternative treatment options while ensuring that all standard clinical practices are met. This partnership allows residents to benefit from both traditional and modern medical care.
Volunteering is a key component of Inpatient Care at KMHC. Volunteers assist with tasks like patient feeding, moving patients, and engaging in activities. Most volunteers are from Kahnawa:ke, but KMHC also partners with Montreal-area schools to provide students the opportunity to gain experience in a hospital setting. Medical students can complete community service hours through the Volunteers Program as well.
Essential caregivers assist individuals with daily living activities in residential and private homes, supporting vulnerable groups like elders and people with disabilities. At KMHC, caregivers play a vital role by providing emotional support and working alongside clinical teams to ensure comprehensive care for residents.
