General ultrasound appointment information
- Ultrasounds currently available at KMHC:
- Abdomen
- Pelvis
- Surface
- Vascular
- Follow-up breast
- Viability
- Bring a valid RAMQ card. If you do not have one, please advise the receptionist upon booking your appointment.
- You may take all your medications before and after the exam, unless otherwise indicated by the medical imaging staff.
- Certain ultrasound examinations require some preparation beforehand. Below you will find this information along with a more detailed, downloadable information sheet.
- – If you do not see instructions for the exam you have booked, it is because there is no preparation required.
- Arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled exam time.
- You will be required to change into a hospital gown, no matter what the exam is.
- If you have any known allergies to ultrasound gel, please advise the technologist.
- The technologist CANNOT give you results. Your requesting physician will receive a report from the radiologist in the coming days/weeks following your appointment

Frequently Asked Questions
If you are booked for an abdominal ultrasound:
- You must fast from midnight
- Please continue to drink water and take medications
- Do not chew gum during the fasting period
- If you are diabetic, please advise the receptionist upon booking your appointment. Bring an unopened juice box to your appointment.
- Children 5 and under will require a different fasting period

If you are booked for an abdominal AND pelvis ultrasound:
- You must fast from midnight
- Please continue to drink water and take medications
- Do not chew gum during the fasting period
- 2 hours before the exam, drink 25 oz/ 750 ml of water within a 30-minute window. Do not urinate as to keep a full bladder.
- If you are diabetic, please advise the receptionist upon booking your appointment. Bring an unopened juice box to your appointment.
- Children 5 and under will require a different fasting period

If you are booked for a pelvic ultrasound:
- 2 hours before the exam, drink 25 oz/ 750 ml of water within a 30-minute window. Do not urinate as to keep a full bladder.
- This exam may include an endovaginal portion. If you have any concerns about this part of the exam, please speak with the technologist about it.

If you are booked for a renal doppler ultrasound:
- You must be fasting for 12 hours
- Please continue to drink water and take medications
- Do not chew gum during the fasting period
- If you are diabetic, please advise the receptionist upon booking your appointment. Bring an unopened juice box to your appointment.
- Children 5 and under will require a different fasting period

If you are booked for a viability ultrasound:
- You and your doctor have concluded you are less than 14 weeks pregnant
- 2 hours before the exam, drink 25 oz/ 750 ml of water within a 30-minute window. Do not urinate as to keep a full bladder.
- This exam will have an endovaginal portion. If you have any concerns about this part of the exam, please speak with the technologist about it.
